One has to question why the Schools funding formula consultation here, which has just a 6 week consultation period, including 2 weeks of the schools holiday, was pushed through so quickly and prior to the Early Years Funding Review. After all they are not looking to implement the schools funding formula until 2019-20 yet the Early Years Formula is starting in 2017. And why have 2 separate reviews anyway – would it not make more sense at this time to join the reviews and indeed join the full spectrum of children’s education funding into one holistic 0-19 system. Maybe it’s because they are looking for 2 distinct outcomes and this is another indicator that Early Years is becoming further removed from education and more aligned to childcare that we in the sector would like?
On that note, I came across an interesting proposal from the Worcestershire Governors Association (WAG) to bring all of education under one remit. Entitled Fair Funding for Education its an interesting read and perhaps the overhaul that the system needs in order to become fairer for everyone.
In the meantime, we need to make our voices heard at every opportunity and therefore I am asking everyone to put in their own response to the consultation. You can complete this online but at 26 questions long you might prefer to download my completed word template and add your own details and make amendments as you see fit – or just send it in as it. You can then Email them direct with the word document.
This is about ensuring we don’t get lost from the education system, making sure the Government hears our voice round every corner, let them know we are becoming a greater force to be reckoned with. Yes, I know there are a lot of consultations at the moment – and I even question whether some of these are to distract and divert us away from the key issues – wear us down before our own one comes along, they may well be. However, there is also the possibility that our own EY Funding Consultation will be a tick box exercise only and the key decisions are being made here with the Schools one, so make sure you send something in there is only 6 days left – Closing is April 17th – so do it NOW please.
