Research suggests that the scientific knowledge of a teacher is an important part of delivering an engaging learning experience for children. This is especially hard for KS2 teachers, requiring an intricate knowledge across all areas of the curriculum. Recent efforts in teacher training have tried to address this, but have failed to recognise the key concept that supports learning; being aware of the misconceptions in primary science that impact on the child’s ability to move forward. If teachers can spot these misconceptions forming in advance, they can preempt the mistakes that children will make, and quickly move their learning forward, avoiding the possible pitfalls.
This course aims to examine some of the common misconceptions in science that children have, and importantly how to predict when misconceptions might occur across all areas of the curriculum.
